Plastic Surgery - An Introduction

There are two main fields of Plastic Surgery: Reconstructive Plastic Surgery and Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. The former includes mainly the correction of deformities due to injuries, developmental anomalies or tumorous diseases, and the latter equals cosmetic surgery. Of course there are several overlaps between the two fields.

Aesthetic surgery is a procedure that is performed on the patient's request in order to improve his/her appearance.

Our aim is to carry out a safe and successful procedure that meets the patient's expectations most. These operations can be performed either in local or general anaesthesia with only a slight feeling of discomfort and encumbrance for the patient.

The procedures involving general anaesthesia are performed in hospital with short, ie. 1 day in-patient care. Many of our patients reported how they regained their lost self-confidence which we could also notice at their behaviour and clothing habits. After the operation they became more successful both in their business and private lives.

Introduction

About the visit

After the patient had received a detailed verbal description on the whole process of the surgical procedure serving best her or his needs, she or he can look at the archive having documented the results of plastic surgeries performed by our clinic, both digitally and photographically recorded. Additional examination by other equipements can be added to the personal visit, if necessitated.

A thorough and recent laboratory report is always required prior to any surgical procedure. During the process of the planning of the operation and the exact achievement of the patient's claims, the doctor has to considerate the vision of the client as well as her or his conditions and characteristics, as priority. Therefore the evaluation of the possible solutions always depends on the individual's case.

Who can perform plastic surgery?

In Hungary only physicians having obtained a degree on plastic surgery validated and issued by the Orszagos Szakkepesito Bizottsag are eligible to perform any plastic surgical procedure, which term has to be listed on the contract signed by both the client and the doctor.

The highest national forum of plastic surgeons is the Magyar Plasztikai, Helyreállító és Esztétikai Sebész Társaság (MPHEST)(Assosiacion of the Hungarian Plastic, Reconstructiv and Aesthetic Surgeons), where the members also belong to the International Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery (IPRAS), in the same time. Within the MPHEST the so called Magánorvosi Szekció (Private Surgeons' Section) also operates, gathering most of the plastic surgeons running their own private praxis, doing aesthetic plastic surgery. Do not hesitate always inquire after the circumstances of the operation, as well as all the details of the whole procedure, prior and following the operation. Get all necessary information on the clinic and its licenses before committing to the procedure.

How painful is the procedure?
What sort of restrictions can someone expect following the operation?

Most operations are followed by little discomfort and small amount of pain, which can be dealt with easily by the patient. Naturally the level of pain is of a subjective matter, and can vary according to the individual's characteristics as well as the type of the surgical procedures. Depending on the different interventions the patient receives different post-operative treatments and advices, that are applied individually and always discussed prior to the procedure in details.

The healing of the scars

Every surgery leaves a scar behind. It would be a misconception to think that a plastic surgeon works without scars.

What are the characteristics of the scars of plastic surgeries? The incision made on the skin is always performed with the highest consideration of the requirements by the principals of plastic surgery providing the highest care possible to the skin's reconstruction. This means that the incision is always made with sharp accuracy, to the shortest length possible, hidden and arranged into skin-fold and in regards of muscle and tissue orientations. The optimal scar healing requires the least tension possible exposed onto the skin, as well as proper blood flow in the surrounding tissues.

In attempt to provide the best circumstances possible for the scar, we use special threads and suture techniques, as well as additional bonding techniques, stickers/bondages. Providing a peaceful healing environment with the least stimulation is a crucial factor in the post-operative phase. One of the most important thing still remains the good healing characteristic of the individual. If all conditions are present, the patient can expect a nice, smooth, barely visible whitish scar of a thickness of an individual hair, that does not protrude out of the skin, soft to the touch, and is not disturbing in any ways.

Where and how do we perform the operation?

According to the technique of the anaesthesia the surgical procedures can be divided into two major groups. Procedures of the less complicated types followed by small pain and little or no stress at all on the body are performed with local anaesthetia, in our private clinic located at 10. Lovas street in Budapest, near the Buda Castle. These operation are ambulant, meaning that the patient can leave the clinic right after the procedure.

The procedures of larger volume and of more serious intervention, followed by larger stress on the body cannot be performed with local anaesthesia, and require anaesthetization amongst an environment of a hospital, either deep narcosis or intravenous anaesthesia. These operations are performed at the Plastic Surgery Department of the István (St.Steven) Hospital on the base of an agreement between the hospital and our clinic, amongst advanced technical equipements, with rooms of two beds and separate bathrooms provided for 24 hours following the operation.
